**Digipack Analysis

Jessie Creatini Digipack

What do you like about the Digipak?
Jessie Creatini's digipack demonstrates good, strong use of her editing ability as the pictures are cut out extremely well and blended/smudged in order to appear smooth and realistic on the cd itself. I love the colour scheme she has used, the black and gold connotes mystery of the unknown darkness, which fits in well with the masquerade theme highlighting the idea of a hidden identity. The mask is relatable to our music video also as these are the masks used, making it even more relevant.  The gold glow around the characters captures the audiences attention, allowing us to further stand out as we are in black. The gold glow was a great choice as it demonstrates value and importance,as this is our first album it could suggest our future and direction of our hopes and ambitions of being successful artists.
The track list still consists of elements of fun through the bright, colourful fonts which stand out, clearly and are easily read against the black background. It also appears to evoke the club/dance element as the colours are energising and could be related to LED lights which are used in nightclubs, the black background again emphasises this.
As for the front cover of the digipack I think it appears minimalistic but modern and professional, the images represent our fun, carefree characters revealing to the audience perhaps our youth, attracting a similar audience to ourselves. The images also familiarise the audience with each character, it is obvious we are a girl band, the red title is prominent and clear which is important as it needs to be simple, eye catching and easy to read. The 'closure' title really appeals to me as it is bold and looks similar to a stamp of gold, which fits well with the golden glow,

Does it relate to the genre characteristics?
How would you improve it?
I think Jessie's digipack is probably the best in our group but she could make minimal changes to enable it to be improved.  For example, although the images on the  front cover is successful in capturing our attention in the correct way, I think the black background over powers the images slightly, as the images are quite small. I think the images could have been enlarged slightly along with the title font to make the images appear more dominant and over powering.
The personal writing about us allows our fans to develop an understanding and connection towards us, which allows us to be identified individually as characters and not just a band, I like the continuous use of colour she has used subtly simply on the names which makes it seem fun. However I think if she were to have changed the background colour this would have better matched the theme. She could have glazed the background with faint black, using colourful/gold or white font for it to stand out and perhaps added gold glow to further indicate the importance of the artists.
The poster which she has created is a picture of us with the lyrics 'love me all night long' which relates to the song 'Where have you been' artists generally have lyrics of their song on posters as people enjoy relating to lyrics. As we are considered as new artists and our first released single is 'Where have you been; I think it would have been better to have had the title of the song 'where have you been', as it ensures further advertisement. This is still relevant though as the people who listen to the music will relate to the intimate lyrics, it also shows affection, which the title does not, the repetition is powerful as it is almost like an echo in our thoughts.

Selina Suri Digipack

What do you like about the Digipak?
I like the ways in which Selina has used pastel colours on the two extra slides which would be used as posters etc in order to emphasise promotion. The pastel colour such as pinks and greens which are used soften and feminise the album but do not over power it like bright hot pink can, it can also make it look less  realistic.
She has developed a continuous theme of using the eyelash brush with imprints of lips and hearts  throughout her work, on the cd, front cover and the pink design, making it appear creative expressing a free trail of thought as if they are doodles on paper, which makes it girly and cute. This also demonstrates extra skills and added effort as she has gone to the effort of downloading and searching for different brushes which she feels would match with the theme. I like the way Selina as expressed the 'togetherness'  of a girl band by simply putting 'the girls' on the cd and writing 'from us' to you, as if representing us as a pack, I feel this highlights the friendship and bond in our group.
Selina's digipack identifies different themes throughout her work, for example the cd and front cover use golds and blacks which could evoke the dance, nightlife, more grown up aspect. The pictures however combined with the pastel colours reveal our fun characteristics as if being professional and fun at the same time., merging the genres and audience together.
I am impressed by the way Selina has gone to the effort of attempting to make it look professional, by considering the recordings -'DefJam', administrators and producers, followed by our website, as this information is usually on a digipack, especially when they are attempting to promote themselves. Selina's Def Jam logo font could be a little smaller as I feel this attracts attention over the title or track list itself. Simple features such as the website is important when attracting attention and drawing in fans. I do really like Selina's ideas and what she has designed, however I think the cd and front cover seems slightly fragmeneted from the rest of the work, although this demonstrates both sides of the girl band well and I like it I think most digipacks have a consistant theme/ flow throughout.

Selina has also used prints such as the eyelash theme throughout which could depict the voyeurism theme and the idea of looking through someone else's eyes which was a good idea, the kisses and hearts make it look affectionate as if we are giving back to our 'fans'.

Jenna's Wilkins Digipack

Jennas digipack consistantly demonstrates a feminine, girly, energetic theme throughout conveying the fun element of our characters. This highlights our demographic as it would be majority females with an interest in girl bands however the 'Where have you been' track appeals to both male and female, therefore it could diverge those with an interest in the music away as a male is less likely to purchase such a feminine cd, however they do equally lack interest in a girl band. On the other hand I think the cd cover is energising and allows the images of us to remain prominant. The neon like luminous colours enhance our personalities as it emphasises our actions of not taking ourselves too seriously.  These bright colours successfully demonstrates her considering the genre of music, combined with a more specific target audience. The handwriting font suggests its lack of seriousness making it appear as if a photobook or diary of memories alongside the slanted placing of images, I like this as it is unique and different, Jenna has matched the colours with the font and positioning of pictures well. Jenna has also made the images stand out simply through a pale pink glow and blue circle/bubble like border surrounding our images which again is successful in bringing the images to the forefront. Personally the hot pink is slightly over powering but is still successful in portraying the electro/dance theme throughout our music, when looking into other digipacks however, artists rarely use pink as it is seen as a one sided colour, even though it does cearly and arguably represent our target audience.

What do you like about the Digipak?
I dislike my digipack I do not think it has a specific theme throughout, as this was my first, I was just simply experimenting with photoshop.  When designing i think it is important to adopt specific colours and use them throughout in order to portray our theme or genre convention. I think the use of gold and black would have been better as it makes it not only appear significant and important/valuable but also would fit in well with the masquerade theme mask  with an air of suspicion and voyeurism which is further exploited through our 'Where have you been video'.
On the other hand the bright pinks and purples do portray the fun qualities  of a girl band which is conveyed with our facial expressions and poses, lacking in seriousness the baby pink also connotes an essence of innocence which would be appropriate in appealing to a younger audience female audience. I should have avoided pink also and used other bright colours to indicate our fun side.

My digipack demonstrates a poor use of photoshop as in areas you can still see the greenscreen, this is disappointing and unprofessional, at times I did use the blur tool but this could have been used more often, I think my struggle to cut out images has relfected through my ability to use photoshop. The back of the cd cover also lacks information and is too dull it does not specifically connote a theme, I originally wanted to have the names of the songs around the swirl, the wording either way makes the tracks challenging to read which is a negative.

However I do like the cd cover and cd, I liked the idea of adding a black and white or sepia tint to the front cover, we still stand out against the white, the black and white creates seriousness making it appear as if our facial expressions, mine and jenna's in particular are in shock. The black and white may stand out less against other cd covers especially when comparing it to the rest of the groups, however I think the characters are a good size and they dominate the front, Jenna's picture could have been larger to make it the same size as ours so it is even. I think it would have looked more effective if I added a bright glow around the lettering on our hands to enable the name of our band 'chic' to be emphasised and clearly noticed, perhaps with either a pale gold/pink or even different colours for each letter to suggest each letter is individually representing us as we are chic! I selected this font as it is basic, easy to read but flows elegantly on the cover, visible but appearing delicate. This matches the lighting strike through the cd also, which could show he dance, fiery element of the songs.
The images/posters in the digipack are plain and could have had lyrics in order to familiarise the audience with our songs, which would have made it more relevant and offered further advertising opportunities as we could promote ourselves. The many pictures are conventional to a typical digipack as the fans would want to se images, the light hearted joking images would appeal to our demographic of teenage girls which would perhaps look up to a girl band as a role model, the light colours are appropriate for this, but similarly to Jenna's i think it would have been better to avoid pink. I should have also put glow around pictures to add significance enabling them to stand out, the colours do offer a friendly approach alongside the pictures though. I also feel that the masquerade mask has little relevance by the way I have placed it, I should have had 'where have you been lyrics' alongside this in order to suggest voyeurism, changing the colours to evoke mystery, it looks very messy the way it is.

  1. This post demonstrates some group work and decisions within the digipak task. You have analysed each digipak well and you have also considered some of the strengths and weakness throughout.

Now you need to explain which digipak your group will submit and why?
